After the harvest season, currants look tired: the leaves fall off, the branches become thinner, and the roots lose strength. It is in the fall that it is important to help the bushes recover so that they can calmly survive the frosts and quickly grow in the spring. The best thing to do at this time is to add a handful of wood ash under each bush.
Ash is one of the most affordable and safe natural fertilizers. It contains no chemicals, but it contains everything that plants need to prepare for winter: potassium strengthens shoots, phosphorus helps develop roots, calcium reduces the acidity of the soil and makes it “softer.”
Before application, the soil under the bushes is slightly loosened, leaves and weeds are removed. Then pour about a glass of ash under each bush and carefully mix it with the top layer of soil. If the autumn is dry, you can water it with warm water – the nutrients will be absorbed faster and reach the roots.
After a few weeks, the bushes become noticeably stronger, the bark becomes denser, the shoots ripen and do not freeze even in severe frosts. In spring, currants quickly begin to grow, produce powerful green branches and delight with healthy leaves.
