Who is Serhiy K.?
49-year-old Serhiy K. was detained in August 2024 in a town near Rimini, where he was on vacation with his family. He denies any involvement in the attack and claims that he was in Ukraine at the time of the gas pipeline explosion.
The media reported that K. was supposed to be there organizer of the sabotage operationand not – as previously thought – just one of the coordinators.
Germany: false documents, a yacht from Rostock and explosives
According to the German prosecutor's office, the group in which Serhiy K. allegedly operated rented a yacht in the port of Rostock using false identity documents. With the help of intermediaries, she was to prepare a sabotage operation in the Baltic Sea.
Investigators say that divers attached at least four explosives to the Nord Stream gas pipelineand then they were picked up by the driver and transported to Ukraine.
The decision of the Italian Supreme Court does not mean the release of the suspect, but suspends his extradition. The case returns to the appellate court, which will have to re-assess whether the transfer of the Ukrainian to Germany is consistent with the law and procedural guarantees.
The case of the attack on Nord Stream remains one of the most controversial and mysterious operations in recent years, and the fate of Serhiy K. may play a key role in its further investigation.
