Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will be incarcerated from October 21 at La Santé prison in Paris, to atone for his 5-year prison sentence, AFP wrote on Monday, after the case of the former French leader in the National Financial Prosecutor's Office (PNF).
Sarkozy, 70 years old, has been convicted of involvement in an criminal conspiracy and will become the first head of state of a country in the European Union (EU) that reaches the bars.
In the Parisian region, only two preventive arrest centers have a “district” for “vulnerable” people, that is, one capable of ensuring the safety of the former president: La Santé in Paris and Fleury-Merrogis, south of the Capital.
Previously contacted by AFP, neither Sarkozy's lawyer, Christophe Trebin, nor PNF commented the date and place of his incarceration, a premiere in the history of the French Republic, notes Agerpres.
At the end of September, in addition to the sentence of five years in prison, one of which with suspension, the court decided – invoking the severity of the facts – and that the application of the sentence must take place immediately, even if Sarkozy appealed and vehemently rejected all the charges.
The former French leader will therefore have to reach prison, after being found guilty of participating in an criminal organization related to the alleged financing of his 2007 election campaign by former Libian dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
There were no evidence that the respective payments really had a place, but the court held that Sarkozy and his close friends have been active to get financial support from the Gaddafi regime.
