A resident of the Kirovsky district of Krasnoyarsk, Zinaida Nikolaevna Zhuravleva, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War and an honorary citizen of the city, celebrated her 103rd birthday. This was reported to the mayor's office.
During the war, 19-year-old Zinaida with other women and teenagers dug trenches for fighters in Karelia near Leningrad. Later she was transferred to work at a peat quarry in the local swamps, thanks to which people escaped the cold.
“In the cold, knee-deep in water, we washed away the peat with water cannons, cut it and loaded huge pieces into trolleys that went to Leningrad,” recalls Zinaida.
After the men left for the front, the girls did hard work on their own: they lifted rails, sleepers and worked with heavy equipment.
After the war, Zinaida Nikolaevna moved to Krasnoyarsk and worked for more than 30 years at the Krasmash plant – first as a driver in the boiler room, then as a security guard. Awarded the medal “For the Defense of Leningrad”.
