In response, the US president announced his intention to introduce 100% tariffs on goods from China from November 1 and additional restrictions on the export of US strategic software.
Donald Trump talks about China's leader
During a conversation with journalists aboard Air Force One on the way to Israel, Trump emphasized that despite their disputes, he had good relations with Xi Jinping.
— He's a very tough man, a very smart man. He is a great leader for his country. I have a great relationship with him – he said. He added that he understood his decision and “doesn't even say he was wrong,” but the US responded “with something much stronger.”

Trump admitted that he still plans to increase tariffs, but the planned date is “eternity away” and the situation may change. He also did not rule out a meeting with Xi during the November APEC summit in South Korea.
In a Sunday post on Truth Social, the president again tried to ease tensions.
“I think everything will be fine with China. Don't worry! The highly respected President Xi was simply having a bad time. He doesn't want a crisis for his country, and neither do I. The US wants to help China, not hurt it!!!“- he wrote.
From shock to an attempt at dialogue
Just days earlier, Trump had sharply criticized China's export restrictions, calling them “shocking” and saying he saw “no reason” to meet with Xi. Now the American president's tone has clearly softened.
His statements show that despite the threat of an escalation of the trade war, Washington may still be looking for a way to reach an agreement with Beijing – although at the same time it is preparing for decisive economic actions.
