The Slovenian Pogacar Tadej (27 years old, UAe Team Emirates-XRG) ended a spectacular season with another solitary victory, equaling the five triumph record in the Lombardia Tour, owned by Fausto Coppi from 1954.

The platoon was aligned at the beginning under a bright sun and cool autumn temperatures in Como, for the last race-monument of the season, mostly known as the falling leaves, with a 241 km and Finiș route in Bergamo.

No rival could respond to the lightning attack of the world champion on the steeper slopes of the decisive final climb, Passo di Ganda, and the Slovenian has traveled the last 36 km without being challenged.

He passed the finish line in front of a multitude in delirium and added his name again in the history books of cycling, becoming the only road that won Lombardia five times in a row, which has twice won the world title and the last Italian race in the same season.

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quickstep) could not keep up with Pogacar's winning movement and woke up in the familiar position, to follow his rival alone. He finished in second place for the third time following Pogacar, after the World Championships in Rwanda and the European Championships in France.

Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling) initially followed Evenepoel on the final climb, but was left behind for the last 10 km to the finish line and kept on the third place at the arrival of Bergamo.

Pogacar Tadej: “This is the best season so far”

After the completion of the competition, asked if his historical achievements make him feel unique, Pogacar replied: “No. Everyone can feel unique and everyone is on their own. To win five times in a row, but every time I start, I feel that this route, this race fits me perfectly.”

Then added that “Also, at the same time, I have such a good team around me that we can succeed. Thank you very much to all my teammates! All the boys who led to the final climb, protecting me from behind, did a first-class job and were impressive”.

I always say, seven years in a row, that “this is my best season so far” and again I can say that this is the best season so far”, Slovenian pointed out.
