Before the onset of cold weather, apple trees need special care. After fruiting, the trees gradually weaken, the roots lose activity, and the shoots become less resistant to low temperatures. One simple and proven way to strengthen plants and help them survive the winter calmly is to add a handful of wood ash under the roots.
Wood ash is a natural remedy that works gently but effectively. It improves the structure of the soil, makes it less acidic, and also saturates it with important elements: potassium, phosphorus and calcium. These substances support the root system, promote the ripening of shoots and increase the trees' resistance to stress, including frost.
Before adding ash, the soil is lightly loosened around the trunk at a distance of 20–30 cm, being careful not to damage the roots. Then pour a handful of powder under each tree. If the soil is dry, it is recommended to lightly moisten the area with warm water to help nutrients penetrate to the roots more quickly. The procedure takes only a few minutes, but the result is noticeable already in winter and spring.
Trees prepared in this way become stronger and more resistant to cold weather. The bark becomes coarser, the shoots ripen better, and in the spring the apple trees wake up active, without signs of freezing. Even old apple trees that previously suffered from frost remain healthy and strong.
