Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has taken up advisory positions in the technology giant Microsoft and the artificial intelligence start-up Anthropic, British media reported on Friday.

At Microsoft, Sunak will provide strategic perspectives on macroeconomic and geopolitical trends and is scheduled to speak at the annual Microsoft Summit, while at Anthropic he will advise on strategy, macroeconomic and geopolitical trends, according to letters sent to him by the Business Nominations Advisory Committee. (ACOBA).
The committee, which regulates and reviews matters relating to MPs taking up additional paid work, reminded Sunak that he cannot advise on the two companies seeking contracts in the UK or lobby the government on their behalf until two years after leaving the position of prime minister, i.e. until July 2026.
Sunak was the Prime Minister of Great Britain from the end of October 2022 to the beginning of July 2024. After the devastating defeat suffered by his Conservative Party in the general election last July, he also resigned as leader of this party, but still sits in the House of Commons as a rank-and-file MP.
After the election defeat, there was speculation that Sunak would resign from parliament and go to California to take up a position in Silicon Valley. Sunak previously lived in California and still has a home there. In July this year, he took up the position of advisor at the investment bank Goldman Sachs, where he worked before starting his political career.
On his LinkedIn profile, Sunak announced that all remuneration from Microsoft and Anthropic will be donated to The Richmond Projecta foundation he and his wife run that aims to improve British numeracy skills. (PAP)
