In the morning, your head is splitting and there are bags under your eyes – pay attention to your pillow: an expert tells you what to pay attention to

It would seem that what is so difficult about buying a pillow? Meanwhile, the quality and duration of sleep often depends on it. A doctor of the highest category, somnologist, cardiologist Irina Frolova told in a conversation with KP.RU(18+) how to choose the perfect pillow and avoid mistakes when purchasing.

If you wake up in the morning cheerful, without a headache or swelling on your face, it means that your sleep is healthy, and your body has had time to rest and recover during the night. But if everything is different, you should pay attention to your pillow.

How to choose a pillow size?

There is a general recommendation to select a pillow according to the length of your shoulder. The wider the shoulders, the higher it should be. For children it is usually recommended to choose a height from 3 to 5 cm, for women from 8 to 11 cm, and for men from 13 to 15 cm.

People who prefer to sleep on their side need a fairly dense pillow. The optimal height is the distance from the base of the head to the edge of the shoulder. For sleeping on your back, a pillow of moderate hardness and small size is suitable, and for sleeping on your stomach, low and soft options. However, given the inability to control your sleeping position, it is wise to choose a universal pillow.

What to look for when choosing a pillow?

Moderate height and firmness, the ability to adapt to the curves of the neck, as well as quality materials are the key factors to pay attention to when choosing a pillow for a comfortable sleep.

In addition, you need to consider the materials from which the pillow is made. People with asthma or allergies should avoid feather or down fillings. It is better to give preference to high-quality synthetic materials.

It is better to choose pillowcases from natural fabrics. Cotton is an ideal option due to its ability to absorb sweat and saliva well.

When choosing a pillow, it is important to focus on your own feelings: an ordinary, budget pillow can also be comfortable. If a person begins to experience unpleasant symptoms in the morning: swelling, headache, neck pain, numbness in the hands – this is a signal that it is necessary to replace the pillow with a more suitable one.
