The end of remote work at Allegro. Can the company order you to return to the office?

Changes in the labor market that involve limiting remote work are being talked about more and more often. In the last days of September, the voices of Allegro employees appeared in the public space, outraged by the need to return to stationary work and plans to close two offices. We are looking at this situation again, checking whether the company had grounds to change its employment conditions.

The first information about changes in remote work at Allegro appeared at the end of September this year. As we informed, from January 2026, the company is introducing a 4:1 model, i.e. 4 days a week in the office and 1 day of remote work, and additionally intends to close offices in Wrocław and Gdańsk. Allegro's plans were met with a wave of criticism from employees, but the question still remains whether the company's actions were legal.
The Allegro Employees Trade Union does not hide its disappointment
The Allegro employee organization issued a statement on September 30. In a document published on Facebook we read that The union does not support the closure of offices, considering the relocation proposal an interference in the private lives of employees and paying attention to the lack of conversations with the organization (even despite the lack of such an obligation).
In the case of remote work, Allegro was obliged to consult employees, although it did not have to agree to their proposals. According to information obtained from the Allegro Employees' Union, during the talks the organization proposed, among others: “additional funding for travel costs to the office, introduction of 2 weeks of additional remote work during the holiday period, or abolition of the obligation to work from the office for shifts starting after 11 a.m.”, but most of the solutions were rejected.
The only thing that the trade unionists managed to negotiate was the working model “4 days in the office: 1 day remotely” and the postponement of the changes until January 2026. The new rules will apply to everyone, regardless of their position and period of previous employment. As the organization emphasizes, neither in the case of closing offices nor returning to stationary work, Allegro did not provide data justifying these decisions:
However, we received a declaration of belief that returning to offices is a decision intended to improve cooperation and increase the number of innovative ideas and solutions. Time will tell what this decision will change. – ZZPA responds.
Employment at Allegro: most of them remotely, full-time
At the end of 2024, Allegro employed nearly 6,900 employees, the vast majority of whom were employed under employment contracts.

According to the information provided to Bankier.pl by Marcin Gruszka from the Allegro Press Office, approx. 60% of Allegro's full-time employees worked remotelyhowever, this does not include people employed in the office only (5:0) and office first (4:1) models, i.e. the management board and top-level managers (for them these conditions are valid from the beginning of 2025). The company also had a hybrid model, i.e. 2 days in the office, as well as remote first (1 day stationary) and remote only. The latter was mainly used by parents of children aged 1 to 4 years and for them the remote working conditions remain unchanged, although some employees from this group chose the hybrid variant.
The rules of remote work were set out in separate regulations, the changes of which were presented to employees 3 months in advance, and the new regulations were agreed with the trade union organization. Individual conditions are to be agreed with people who are unable to return to offices due to living in another city, caring for another person or health condition.
When asked how many employees there were employed in Wrocław and Gdańsk, Allegro responds that approximately 100 and 50 people, respectively. The company does not plan any layoffs and proposes relocation to other cities; As you know, in parallel with closing offices, the company intends to increase employment in Krakow and Toruń.
Remote work under the law
We asked lawyers to assess the situation of Allegro employees, as there are still doubts whether the employer can resign from remote work in any situation.
There are persistent suspicions among the company's employees that the return to stationary work and the simultaneous closure of two offices is an attempt to force employees to give notice and avoid group layoffs, but currently there is no indication that Allegro's actions violate labor law.
