US First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that thanks to cooperation with Russia in response to her letter regarding Ukrainian children deported to Russia, eight children were returned to their families in the last 24 hours. The president's wife assessed that Vladimir Putin showed readiness to cooperate.

During an appearance at the White House, Melania Trump announced that she had received a response to her letter to Vladimir Putin regarding children taken by Russia from Ukraine and that Putin had shown readiness to cooperate on this issue.
– Since then, President Putin and I have maintained an open channel of communication (…) Over the past three months, both sides have participated in several unofficial meetings and telephone conversations, always in good faith. We agreed to cooperate for the good of all those involved in this war. “My representative worked directly with President Putin's people to ensure the safe reunification of children with their families between Russia and Ukraine,” the First Lady said. “Indeed, eight children have been reunited with their families in the last 24 hours,” she said.
The US president's wife added that the broader process to return children to their families is still ongoing, and following her comments about the children, who will soon turn 18, Russia is expected to soon allow them to leave the country.
She also revealed that she received detailed information from the Kremlin about the children who were deported and that it was verified by the White House.
– Plans are already underway to reunite more children in the near future. I hope peace comes soon. It can start with our children, she concluded.
The US First Lady's letter to Vladimir Putin about Ukrainian children was delivered to the Russian leader during the summit of US and Russian presidents in Alaska. Previously, Melania Trump also raised this topic in conversations with the wife of the Ukrainian president, Olena Zelenskaya.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, Russia deported approximately 20,000 people from the occupied territories of Ukraine. children, giving some of them up for adoption in Russia. A small part was returned to families as a result of the actions of the parents themselves and diplomatic contacts between Moscow and Kiev. The child abduction case led to Putin being charged with a war crime by the International Criminal Court.
