MegaFon launched a new data processing center (DPC) in St. Petersburg using Russian-made equipment in engineering systems. The data center, built using modular technology, provides for further scaling and placement of more than 800 racks with a total capacity of up to 14 MW.
The data center has become the largest platform for hosting the operator’s network infrastructure. Its main task is to ensure the reliability and stability of the network, as well as the storage and processing of large volumes of data used by MegaFon subscribers throughout the country.
“A distinctive feature of our infrastructure facility, along with the domestic origin of the equipment, is its energy efficiency. We designed and built the data center taking into account our own technical expertise and unique Russian engineering experience. A special source of pride is domestic climate control equipment, which in terms of energy efficiency is in no way inferior to its global counterparts. Moreover, we are constantly increasing the volume of import substitution, which provides an incentive for local developers and manufacturers to develop, and also strengthens the technological sovereignty of the industry,” says Alexey Titov, technical director of MegaFon.
The climate in the computer rooms of the new data center is controlled by ventilation units made in Russia. They automatically select the operating mode depending on the temperature and humidity of the environment. Based on external conditions, air cooling, water mats or freon compressors are used. To increase the efficiency of heat removal, hermetic zones with hot aisle insulation were created in the new data center. The heated air is collected in a separate chamber, taken out to the installation, where it is cooled in the selected mode, and returned to the machine room. This method of cooling equipment helps reduce energy costs and increase productivity.
In addition to climate control, the data center is equipped with domestic fire safety systems, transformers and high-voltage cells. The operation of all systems is monitored 24/7 using monitoring systems.
The new data center is built using modular technology, which makes it possible to put several more computer rooms into operation over the next few years. In total, the project plans to construct two data center buildings with the ability to accommodate more than 800 racks with a total capacity of up to 14 MW.
The constant increase in the volume of transmitted and processed data from subscribers, as well as the need to ensure and maintain network operation at a high level, have become decisive factors for operators to open their own data centers. This year, new MegaFon data centers have already been built and put into operation in Tver and Yekaterinburg with the possibility of scaling. In total, the operator's geo-distributed network includes more than 115 data centers.
