Two Romanian writers are among the favorites at the Nobel Prize for Literature this year. These are Ana Blandiana and Mircea Cărtărescu. The Swedish Academy will announce the winner on Thursday, October 9th.
Cărtărescu's constant presence on the unofficial lists of the favorites is supported by the recent translations of his work in international circulation languages and the appreciation of literary critics in Europe and America.
The poet Radu Vancu believes that the biggest chance of the two nominated has Cărtărescu.
“About 10 years ago, Michael Orthofer, one of the best commentators for the Nobel prize, said that he knows that there are admirers of Mircea Cărtărescu among the Swedish academics, only that Mircea Cărtărescu was a little young, he said 10 years ago. It has been a decade; Mircea is not very young. Need for this prize. More than for Mircea Cărtărescu“Radu Vancu told Europa FM.
As for the indication among the favorite of Ana Blandiana, called a Spanish publication “Ethical and Poetic Voice of Eastern Europe”, Radu Vancu says that the Nobel Prize for Poetry is rarely awarded.
“The latest award for poetry was awarded in 2020 to American Louis Gray. It is a bit early to expect the Swedish Academy to give a prize for poetry. It would be great if it happened. Any of them would be an important recognition. We may, perhaps, finally, the complex of the Nobel Prize for Literature, which makes the whole Romanian literary ecosystem so much. ”says Radu Vancu.
Since its first award in 1901, the Nobel Prize for Literature has been dominated by western male writers.
The Swedish Academy made history last year by choosing South Korean Han Kang, who became the first Asian woman to win the prize.
Among the 121 laureates are only 18 women, and very few of the winners have works written in Asian or Middle East. No African language is represented.
The Nobel Prize for Literature rewards the entire work of an author “that produced the most remarkable creation in an ideal direction”. It is accompanied by a financial reward of 10 million Swedish crowns (about 980,000 euros).
The 2025 winner, who will leave home with a check worth $ 1.2 million, will be announced on Thursday at 2:00 pm.
