'Extinct' shovel-toothed whale washes ashore in New Zealand
It was not possible to save the beached whale; it was handed over to scientists for research. The main thing that experts want to know is how the whale managed to survive and how old it is.
The whale species was considered extinct: the first remains were found in 1872, the second in the 1950s, and the third in 1986. No living specimens of this species were found.
