Steven Gerrard, Liverpool's legend, believes that England's “golden generation” failed because the players were “selfish missed”, consumed by the rivalries at the club level.
In an extremely sincere discussion with his former national teammate, Rio Ferdinand, Liverpool's legend said that England's national was never a real team because of the “immature hatred” and the stars of other top clubs.
The former great midfielder revealed that he felt unhappy in most of the 114 national teams, of which 38 of the captain's position.
Gerrard, who led England to the Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup, was unclear in his evaluation, both towards himself and other players who have underway for over a decade.
Steven Gerrard: “I think we were all selfish missed”
“I think we were all self-missing. Now I watch TV and see Carragher Standing next to Paul Scholes in a fan debate and looks as if they were the best 20-year-old friends.
I see Carragher's relationship with Gary Neville, and they look like they were 20 -year -old. Probably now I am closer to you and more friendly to you than I have ever been in the 15 years we played together.
Why didn't we connect to 20, 21, 22, 23 years old? Was it because of the ego? Of rivalry? Why are we all now mature enough and in a stage of life we are closer and we connect better?
Why couldn't we connect then as teammates to the England team? I think it was because of the culture in England. I wasn't a team. I was a group of talented individuals, and that never works that way, “said Gerrard, invited to the podcast” Rio Ferdinand Preunts “, quoted by Sportal.Hu.
Steven Gerrard: “I liked to play for England. I hated the atmosphere in the canton”
Although Gerrard admitted that he liked to play for his country, the atmosphere around the national canton was simply not fit: “I hated it. I didn't like it. I hated the hotel rooms. In my early period, there were days when I was depressed and completely isolated. For example, I spent seven hours in the room and what would I do?”
Gerrard continued: “I liked the matches. I liked to play for England. I was very proud. I liked the workouts, but that was only 90 minutes. Then I was simply alone. I didn't feel part of a team. I didn't feel a connection with my teammates from England's team.”
