Felix Baumgartner (56 years old), Mihaela Rădulescu's friend, lost her life in a paragliding accident on July 17.

Parachuctism practitioner and Base Jumping, Felix Baumgartner collapsed with his motorized paragliding in the resort of Porto Sant'elpidio (Italy), on the edge of a swimming pool. The Austrian athlete died at the impact, but the reasons for the accident remained unclear, speculating at one point including suffering from a heart attack.

The verdict of the investigators: “Human error. No applied the correct technique”

Yet! In response to an investigation of the German tabloid Bild, the Fermo prosecutor, Raffaele Iannella, explained that “The accident was due exclusively to a human error; the paraglider was in perfect condition and had no defects”.

Iannella detailed: “There was a quick loss of altitude while a spiral descent began, and Baumgartner could not drive the parachute to get out of the spiral.” The spare parachute triggered a few moments before impact and Baumgartner fractured his spine, among other lesions, at the collision with the soil.

Essentially, while in spiral, Baumgartner failed to “apply the correct technique to regain control. This led to loss of control over the aircraft and the inability to get out of the spiral,” concluded the Italian prosecutor.

The Prosecutor's Office has requested the case ranking

The Prosecutor's Office has now requested the case classification. The technical report has already been received by defense lawyers, representing Baumgartner's family. After the accident, the investigators brought an expert from Rome to Fermo Special to determine the cause of the accident. Now, this is clear and gives the bereaved a certain certainty.
