German Chancellor Friedrich Merz accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of leading a “hybrid war” against Germany, reports the DPA agency, taken over by Agerpres.
“He leads an informational war against us. It leads a military war against Ukraine, and this war is directed against us,” said Friedrich Merz on Monday, in an interview for the German NTV television station.
The German Chancellor said that the Russian president wants to overturn the political order in Europe.
“That is why we support Ukraine,” Merz explained, adding that it is in Germany's interest in defending the political order of open and liberal societies in Europe.
When asked if Putin was taking a war against Germany, Friedrich Merz replied: “He was taking a hybrid war against us.”

Regarding the multiplication of incidents with drones in Germany and throughout Europe, Merz said: “We know the threat”, mentioning that Putin wants to intimidate and instill fear.
“We will not be intimidated, but we will defend ourselves effectively against this threat,” said Friedrich Merz.

Asked if he thought about calling Putin, the German Chancellor said that “of course, I think about it.” However, he added: “I can only see that every attempt to talk to him at this time ends with even harsher attacks.”
The German Chancellor said he had a rather heated discussion on this topic with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, at an EU meeting in Copenhagen, last week: “He accused us of not wanting to negotiate.”
Merz reminded him of the Hungarian prime minister that Orban himself had been in Kiev in July 2024, when Hungary exercised the presidency by rotation of the EU, and then in Moscow. “And Putin's response was to bomb a children's hospital in Kiev,” he said.
