How real is the story in “House of Guinness”, the new Netflix series? Disclosures from the backstage of historical drama made by his famous creator
The historical series “House of Guinness”, signed by Steven Knight, known for the success of “Peaky Blinders ”, started on September 25 on Netflix and is in the top of the ranking in Romania. Inspired from real history, the eight -episodes series tells the fascinating story of a family generation that changed the beer industry.
The list of projects written by Steven Knight, nominated for Oscar, continues to grow. The screenwriter and the British director wrote the scenarios for numerous movies, such as Closed Circuit, Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promes.
This month, his attention focuses on “House of Guinness, the series that follows the inheritance of the Guinness family, which, after the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, is divided between his children: Arthur and Edward, Anne and Ben, in 1868, the specialized publication Town and Country.
In an interview with Town and Country, Steven Knight revealed how he came to the story of the Guinness family and explained why he continues to work on vintage dramas.
“I always think the past is much more important than the present,” Knight said.
“The past is a thousand years old, and the present has a year. In the past there are more really good things than today. You have many more options. It's like an age store in which you walk and say,” Look how this! “
Personal experience
His own experience in leading a brewery partially inspired the series, says Steven Knight.
“I like the Guinness beer. Coincidentally, I once had a brewery and I worked with my brothers and sister, I bought a beer factory in America, I brought it here and put on my feet. So I understood a little,” said the screenwriter.
One day, Knight proposed to bring the story of the Guinness family to the screen.
“” I did a little research and I immediately discovered that it was an incredible story and that there was this family that, along the generations, seemed to have changed, but it was the same. Everyone seems to have this feature: a kind of recklessness and also a kind of violation of the law. I make bad decisions, even if it is great, even if it is great, Painters, rebels, politicians on the wrong side … I always make these choices.
Why exactly this generation of the Guinness family?
The story begins with the legendary origin – probably mythological – in which the night guard fell asleep, the barley burned, and thus the Guinness beer became black.
“I looked rather like what happened when this man dies in 1868, and his will connects two very different brothers to each other, like chains, leaving another two on the outside, and from there he starts the whole trajectory. But this is only-it's about the characters,” said the screenwriter.
