55 MEPs demand the rapid start of the accession negotiations of the Republic of Moldova to the EU

55 members of the European Parliament from 19 countries of the European Union have asked the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, to immediately advance the accession negotiations to the Republic of Moldova to the EU, announced the vice -president of the European Parliament, Victor Negrescu.

“It is a powerful political signal: the European Parliament without reservations the European future of the Republic of Moldova, recognizes the reforms made and requires that the option of Moldovan citizens, expressed by the result of the parliamentary elections, be valued and respected. This initiative has the support of important leaders of the European Parliament and demonstrates the Unity and Solidarity of Europe,” Negrescu wrote on Facebook.
MEPs stressed that the recent free and correct choices in Moldova have confirmed the clear desire for citizens of integration in the EU, despite “external pressures and misinformation campaigns ”.
In the letter, they request the placement of the Moldovan negotiations with the EU on the agenda of the council without delay.
“The European Union must act now to demonstrate its support for democracy, resilience and European ambitions of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova”, Victor Negrescu also transmitted.
The Party Action and Solidarity (PAS), Proeuropean and supported by President Maia Sandu, recently won the Moldovan parliamentary elections, in the context of any concerns about the possible interference of Russia.
PAS obtained just over 50% of the votes, confirming the public support for the pro -European direction promoted by Sandu. The Electoral Block Patriots, led by former pro-Russian president Igor Dodon, ranked second, with 24.19% of votes.
