Romania is borrowing more and more. Increasing expenses for public administration, state debt has been enlarged again

The data published by the Ministry of Finance for June show that the government debt is still increasing, reaching over 57% of GDP.

In June 2025, the debt of public administration went up to 1,040.62 billion lei, from 1,034.71 billion lei, in the previous month, according to the data published by the Ministry of Finance (MF), consulted by AGERPRES.

As a percentage of GDP, the government debt increased at 57.2%, from 56.8% in May (GDP according to the EN statement of September 5, 2025).

In June 2025, the medium and long -term debt increased to 976.366 billion lei, from 961.008 billion lei, in May 2025, and the short -term one decreased to 64.26 billion lei, from 73.71 billion, in the previous month.

Most of this debt, respectively 856.53 billion lei, was represented by government securities. The loans were 163.31 billion lei.

The debt in the national currency amounts to 486.82 billion lei, the one in euros at 457.81 billion lei, equivalent, and the debt in US dollars to 93.99 billion, equivalent of lei.

According to the data of the Ministry of Finance, in June, the debt of the central public administration increased to 1,016.59 billion lei, from 1,010.82 billion lei in May 2025, of which 952.35 billion lei in the medium and long term. Most of the debt of the central administration was contracted in lei (468.04 billion lei) and in euros (452.56 billion lei, equivalent).

The debt of the local public administration went up to 24.035 billion lei, from 23.889 billion lei in the previous month, of which 24.016 billion lei in the medium and long term.

At the same time, in the sixth month of this year, the internal debt of the public administration was 522.958 billion lei (524.168 billion lei in May 2025), respectively 28.7% of GDP (28.8% of GDP, in the previous month), of which 504.070 billion lei debt of the central administration and 18.887 billion.

According to the quoted source, the external debt of the public administration was 517,668 billion lei (510.55 billion lei, in the previous month), respectively 28.4% of GDP (28% of GDP, in May 2025), of which 512.52 billion external debt of the central public administration and 5.147 lei.
