The right -wing Party (the action of dissatisfied citizens), led by former billionaire prime minister Andrej Babiš, won the Czech parliamentary elections with about 35% of the votes on Saturday, the Czech Statistics office announced, after counting over 99% of the polling stations. With his return to power, the perspective of a government that would stimulate the populist and anti-immigration camp in Europe increases, according to Reuters.
The presence at the vote at the parliamentary elections that took place on Friday and Saturday in the Czech Republic was almost 69%. With 99% of the constituencies with the counted votes, ANO obtained 34.7% of the votes. In the second place is the Alliance Spolu, represented by Prime Minister Petr Fiala, with 23.2%, and the left obtained only 4.32%.
With almost all counts, ANO is about to replace the current center-right cabinet led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala. The beast also congratulated Babis and acknowledged the defeat.
“We want to save Europe … and we are clearly pro-European and pro-Nato,” Andrej Babiš told the repoters. But winning the elections by ANO “Removes the Czech Republic from the support given to Ukraine and approaches it to the pro-Russian position of Hungary and Slovakia,” writes Le Monde.
Babiš has rejected in the past the calls of the far -right party right freedom and democracy (SPD) to organize a referendum on the exit of the EU and NATO, but said that it will end the “Czech initiative” that has purchased millions of artillery cartridges around the world for Ukraine, financing from Western donors.
In the European Parliament, ANO is part of the far -right block Patriots for Europe, which Babiš himself co -found with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Babiš, 71 years old, who is self -proclaimed “Trumpist”, said they prefer a monopartid government, but the results indicate that it will need partners to govern.
The ANO leader has already told his supporters that his party will try to form a single party, but will discuss with two small parties-including with SPD, far right-to obtain support, as his party will not have an absolute majority, reports Reuters, quoted by News.ro.
President Petr Pavel, who will appoint the next prime minister, would start discussions with the leaders of the parties on Sunday. Before the election, Paul said he will not accept a minister who plays the place of Prague in the EU and NATO.
Paul met with Babiš earlier this week to discuss the conflict of interest of the tycoon as a businessman and politician, as well as the fact that Babiš is tried for fraud with EU grants worth over $ 2 million. Babiš is accused of having removed his farm from southern Prague in his agri-food and chemical agrofert, to make him eligible for an EU subsidy for small businesses.
