Remo Girone, the Italian actor who owed his popularity mainly the role of Tano Cariddi in the TV series “Caracatița”, died at 76 at his home in Monaco, writes the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
Born in Eritrea, a former Italian colony, in 1948, Girone spent his first years in his life, participating in the world of youth show. At the age of 13, he came to Rome and attended the courses of the Academy of Dramatic Arts, a moment of turning in his life.
He started his career in the theater, often working on classic plays. In fact, not the film, but the theater was his great love.
His career in cinematography and television has often taken different roads, as if his story were divided into two, even though he started his career in the cinema with the Hungarian director Jancso and then, returning to Chekhov, he filmed his beautiful cinematographic adaptation of the film “Pescărușul”.

But his success came in 1987, when he appeared in the third season of the drama “La Piovra”-Caracatița de Luigi Perelli, a successful national production, which transformed Michele Placido into an international star and Girone into the best negative character, the true negative character of the television: Tano Cariddi.

The series was broadcast by TVR and also redInted in Romania in the 90s, with a memorable success. “Caracatița” reports the struggle of a commissioner – Corrado Cattani (Michele Placido) with the mafia, after a long period in which the Italian society has strongly confronted this phenomenon. They were the years when the mafia was extremely strong in the south of the country – Sicily, Naples, Palermo and in which the assassin (Giovanni Falcone) and prosecutors (Paolo Borsellino).

Thus, the character, style and popularity accompanied Girone along the following seasons of a drama that obtained record audiences: the fourth, fifth, sixth and tenth seasons of the series. In the seventh, it rarely appeared because of a disease.
Many other appearances in theater, films and serials followed. He also played the famous role of Enzo Ferrari in the movie “Le Mans: Great Challenge”, along with Matt Damon and Christian Bale. His last appearance was in 2021 in the “right to happiness”.
