The incident occurred on Monday, September 29, in the city of Sidoarjo, in the province of East Java, Indonesia, where a building of an Islamic internation collapsed, surprising over 100 students participating in the afternoon prayer. So far, the authorities confirm the death of a 13 -year -old child and the injury of several tens, many of whom are in serious condition.

The tragedy took place during prayer, when over 100 boys were in a building of the Islamic board of Al-Khtery. According to The Guardian, which cites local sources, the structure of the building suddenly gave up, without any warning, and collapsed over the students during the prayer, they were buried under concrete and rubble.

According to local authorities, at least 65 people are missing. The display panel from the command post of the intervention teams, installed near the ruins, showed this creepy figure on Tuesday morning. The families of the students gathered on the spot, but also at the nearby hospitals, crying and imploring the rescuers for the news about loved ones.

“Lord, my son is still buried, Lord, please help me!”a desperate mother shouted, after seeing her child's name on the missing list.

The rescue actions took place the whole night, under extremely difficult conditions, the intervention crews, made up of hundreds of police, firefighters and soldiers, managing to remove eight survivors alive.

Their efforts are made difficult by the fragility of the remaining structure. Rescuers are afraid that the use of heavy machines could cause additional collapses, so work with manual equipment, breathing equipment and discharge kits.

“We provided oxygen and water to those who were still trapped under the rubble and kept them alive as we strived to remove them”, a declared Nanang Sigit, the leader of the rescue team.

He confirmed that several inanimate bodies were observed under the ruins, but the priority was the rescue of those alive.

Illegal works to expand the school

Preliminary investigations suggest that the collapse of the building occurred during illegal extension works. The school, which initially had two floors, had been modified to add two more levels, without the necessary authorizations.

“The foundation of the old building could not support two floors of concrete and collapsed during the pouring process”, explained Jules Abraham Abast, police spokesman.

One of the administrators of the boarding school, Abdus Salam Mujib, said the workers were pouring concrete for a new floor when the whole structure was surprised. “The building had only three floors. It was planned to have four,” he told journalists.

While rescuers are trying to take the children from the rubble, the authorities opened an investigation to establish the responsibilities in the event of the school collapse.

The incident raises serious question marks related to the safety of construction in Indonesia, where the non -observance of the construction standards has caused tragedies in the past.

Just a few weeks ago, another building collapsed in Western Java, causing three deaths; In 2022 the collapse of a three -storey mini -stations in South Kalimantan resulted in the deaths of five people, and in 2018, 75 people were injured when the Mezanin of the Jakarta Stock Exchange building.
