Former President of Romania Traian Basescu has stated, at Digi24, that he will take steps to reobstresses Moldovan citizenship, which he lost following a decision of the former Moldovan president Igor Dodon.

“I could do it before the elections, I received all the forms, I preferred not to do so to give the impression that it is an electoral act. I will do it after the elections,” said Traian Basescu, quoted by News.ro.

The former first Mrs. Maria Basescu still has double citizenship and, as a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, voted on Sunday.

Former President Traian Basescu became a citizen of the Republic of Moldova in November 2016, after taking the oath at the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Bucharest. Traian Basescu received the Moldovan citizenship by the decree of President Nicolae Timofti, signed at the beginning of June 2016. He also became a Moldovan citizen and Maria Basescu.

Traian Basescu, citizenship was withdrawn by a decision of the former president of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon, who did not take the same approach to Maria Basescu. In an interview given in 2018, Dodon argued that Traian Basescu became a Moldovan citizen by violating the law. Basescu attacked in court the decree by which citizenship was withdrawn, but without success.
