Kiev has repeatedly asked Western allies to provide patriotic systems – among the few in the world capable of defending against ballistic missiles – to protect Ukrainian cities and infrastructure from Russian attacks.
Last week, President Volodimir Zelenski confirmed that Israel delivered another patriotic system.
Germany will provide Ukraine additional systems with the support of Norwegian partners, in addition to the three already delivered, according to Pistorius.
“The recent attack on Russia with over 580 drones and over 40 missiles has once again emphasized the importance of strengthening Ukraine.”he said, quoted by Kyiv Independent.
An American Patriot anti -aircraft defense system – also called battery – is made up of radar units for target detection and tracking, a fire control center, rocket launchers and support equipment such as energy sources and communications systems.
Depending on the configuration, a typical battery includes between four and eight launchers, capable of launching a range of rockets designed to intercept ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as aircraft.
Advanced air defense systems such as Patriot remain few globally, some components requiring years to be produced.
Pistorius said Berlin has obtained a commitment from the American producer to quickly restore Germany's stocks, thus allowing the systems to Ukraine without compromising NATO.
