The champions trophy, the Super Cup of French Football, will have a unique destination. The duel between Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille will be played on January 8, 2026 in Kuwait City, on the modern Jaber Al-Ahmad Stadium arena.

The decision belongs to Ligue by Football Professionnel (LFP), who chose Kuwait after other countries, such as Oman or ivory coast, have applied for organization. The move marks a new stage in the internationalization of the competition and comes as a result of the program loaded in the summer of PSG, which forced the postponement of the event until winter.

PSG – Marseille duel, on neutral ground

The confrontation is a special one: PSG, the champion of France, the winner of the Cup and the winner of the Champions League, will take place with man, Ligue vice-champion 1. The rivalry between the two teams is considered the largest “classic” in French football, comparable to Europe's great derby.

“Le Classique”, exported to Golf

Paris Saint-Germain has dominated the champions trophy in recent years. From 2013 until now, the Parisians have lost once, in 2021, when Lille produced the surprise. For Luis Enrique's team (55 years old), the match in Kuwait will be not only an opportunity to add another trophy in the window, but also an opportunity for revenge, after Marseille recently managed to defeat them in the championship (1-0).

France Super Cup – a tradition of globalization

Although it is a trophy of French football, the competition has become a real global event for years. Since 2009, LFP has decided to export the Super Cup outside France, to promote Ligue 1 and the brands of clubs worldwide. Thus, the champions trophy played at:

  • 2009 (Canada)

  • 2010 (Tunisia)

  • 2011 (Morocco)

  • 2012 (US)

  • 2013 (Gabon)

  • 2014 (China)

  • 2015 (Canada)

  • 2016 (Austria)

  • 2017 (China and Morocco)

  • 2021 and 2022 (Israel)

  • 2024 (Doha, Qatar)

Only two recent editions were organized on French field: in 2020, Lens, and in 2023, on Park des Princes in Paris. Now, after almost two decades of football “pilgrimage” around the world, Kuwait becomes the first country in the Gulf (apart from Qatar) that houses the Super Cup.
