Latvia strengthens cooperation with Germany. A large ammunition factory will be created

The plant was designed as a modern production line, which will be equipped with advanced devices for forging and filling bullets. The planned start of construction is scheduled for spring 2026, and the first stage of production is to start a year later.
The head of the Latvian government Evik Silin emphasized that cooperation with Rheinmetall not only strengthens the country's defense capabilities, but is also important for the security of supplies throughout Europe. – By establishing cooperation with Rheinmetall, Latvia not only strengthens national defense, but also contributes to the security of supplies in Europe – the prime minister pointed out.
Minister of Defense Andris Spruds pointed to the technological and cognitive dimension of the project. – The implementation of the project will provide Latvia with a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the production of ammunition from companies with many years of experience in the field of military orders – said Spruds, assessing the investment as an important step in the development of the national defense industry.

Economy Minister Viktors Valainis confirmed that the location of the plant has already been elected, but the place has not yet been made public. Details about the size of the employment or investment schedule outside the general framework have not been disclosed yet.
155 mm caliber ammunition is a standard agent of artillery used by NATO countries, used, among others in self -propelled cannons. The creation of a plant in Latvia is therefore not only national, but also strategic for logistics and sovereignty of this type of ammunition in the region.
