German Rheinmetall will build an artillery ammunition factory in Latvia

The Latvian side concluded an agreement on Thursday with the German reinforcing company Rheinmetall regarding the launch of the Artillery Ammunition Production Plant in Latvia, including 155 mm large shells – the Latvian Corporation of National Defense said.


– By establishing cooperation with Rheinmetall, Latvia not only strengthens national defense, but also contributes to the security of supplies in Europe – said the head of the Latvian government Evik Silin.
The Memorandum about the agreement on this matter was signed by the German and Latvian sides in Hamburg. Rheinmetall Waffe Munition will have 51 percent shares, while the Latvian Corporation of National Defense (VAK), 49 percent The value of the investment is estimated at EUR 275 million.
The plant is to be equipped with the most modern line for forging and filling bullets. The start of its construction is planned for spring 2026, and the production is to start a year later.
– The implementation of the project will provide Latvia with a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the production of ammunition from companies with many years of experience in the field of military orders – admitted the head of the Ministry of Defense Andris Spruds.
In turn, the Minister of Economy Viktors Valainis told Latvian LTV television that the location of the plant has already been elected, but did not reveal where exactly it would be located.
The 155 mm caliber ammunition is the basic agent of NATO's artillery destructionused, among others in self -propelled cannons. (PAP)
