Putin's new strategy in Ukraine, after the Alaska summit convinced of a fundamental detail in Trump's

The intensification of Russian attacks on Ukraine is the best way that Moscow forces Kiev to accept the negotiations under the conditions that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants, while his American counterpart will not do much to strengthen the defense of the invaded country, according to sources close to Kremlin, quoted by Bloomlin, Svoboda.

The Russian leader concluded that military climbing is the best tactic for his goals after the Alaska summit on August 15, according to the sources cited. The discussions he had with the one considered the most powerful man in the world convinced him that Trump is not interested in conflicting.

In the last month, the Russian army has already intensified the attacks on military and civilian targets in Ukraine, after Ukrainian president Volodimir Zelenski refused to give in to the east of the country.

Putin plans to continue to attack the energy network, but also other Kiev infrastructures, according to the sources close to the Kremlin, who discussed with Bloomberg under the protection of anonymity through the sensitive information to which it refers.

Trump again looked frustrated this week because of Putin, who said that he “disappointed” and left the impression that he would impose tougher sanctions against Russia and his allies to cut the supply of the war machine with oil trade. However, the White House leader insisted that Kiev allies take radical measures before the US applied any measure.

European sanctions against Russia need consensus

The European Commission announced on Friday that it has launched a new package of sanctions against Russia to be approved by the Member States of the European Union, which is trying to intensify the pressure on Moscow due to the Ukrainian war, according to France Presse.

The chair of the commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the new measures are also targeting a number of Chinese entities. “We are aiming for refineries, oil traders, petrochemical companies and third countries, including China,” Von Der Leyen said in a press conference.

The EU intends to accelerate the elimination of liquefied natural gas (GNL) imports from Russia into the EU. But in order to approve the proposed measures it is necessary to approve all 27 EU member countries.

But Slovakia and Hungary have announced that they will not give up the pressure made by the Trump administration and will not give up oil and Russian gases as long as the European Union does not offer them supply routes.

Trump has also asked the G7 countries to impose rates to China and India as a penalty for the purchase of Russian gases.

Pressure for future negotiations

Moscow's tactics to continue the war of wear to obtain concessions from Kiev shows that it is encouraged by the restraint of Washington, while Russian officials believe that this strategy could prepare the land for future negotiations.

“It is important for Putin to show Trump and Europeans that he can still afford to escalate the situation,” said Vita Spivak, Russian analyst at Gathehouse Partners consulting firm.

Because Ukraine refused the proposal of the Russian leader from Anchorage, to give in to the unquestioned territories in Donbas to freeze the front line, Putin believed that this justified the conflict, said people close to Kremlin.

More and more powerful attacks against Ukraine

From the Alaska summit until now, Russia's attacks with drones and rockets on Ukraine have increased by about 46%, according to the data of the Ukrainian army, analyzed by Bloomberg.

During this period, some of the largest rocket attacks and drones from the beginning of February 2022 were recorded.

However, although the intensity of attacks on Ukraine targets has increased, all this time the pace with which Russian forces on the front has diminished.

Russia's offensive in eastern Ukraine

The Russian command has redistributed 100,000 soldiers in an attempt to conquer Pokrovsk, a Ukrainian bastion in the Donetk region, Zelenski said this week that Ukrainian troops have managed to regain territory in the region where fierce battles are given.

“The offensive of Russia in the summer of 2025 failed to ensure control over any city concerned in eastern Ukraine,” noted Alex Kokcharov, an analyst at Bloomberg Economics.

While Europeans are trying to limit the imports of Russian oil and gas, the invaded country has its own plan to reduce the supply of Putin's troops in the front area. Kiev's army has taught drone attacks on some Russian key targets.

The blows targeted the oil processing facilities that represent about half of the total refining capacity of Russia, although the actual amount of affected fuel is much smaller, according to the calculations made by Bloomberg.

The war in Gaza, inspiration for Putin

Last week, the drones also hit the largest Russian oil terminal in the Baltic Sea, located in Primorsk, and Kiev has claimed attacks on pumping stations that supply another Baltic Sea Hub, UT-Luga terminal.

Another situation that influences Putin is the war in Gaza that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu carries, two people close to the Kremlin said. The Russian leader considers the military campaign in the enclum much more severe than the conflict in Ukraine, noting that it was largely accepted by the US and Europeans, undermining the criticisms of Moscow.

Nikolai Petrov, a principal researcher at the Center for New Eurasian strategies, considers that Putin will not get visible victories on the front until winter and resort to psychological pressure, including massive bombings, to achieve their goals.
