At the meeting on Thursday, September 18, Davis Joint Unified School District, Beth Bourne, a well-known activist and president of the Yolo branch of the Moms for Liberty organization, resorted to an unusual method to draw attention to his message on the legislation on Transgender students, stripping to the school.

The images have quickly viral in the online environment, where they have generated many comments.

During the three minutes allocated for public comments, the woman, who is the mother of a non-binary child, began her intervention, criticizing the policy by which the students from the secondary schools can choose their locker room according to the gender identity.

As he held his plea, Beth Bourne said: “I will show you what the situation looks like when I am naked” and began by removing his blouse in front of the school council. Then he also took off his pants, staying only in a two-piece swimsuit.

“Can I put my physical education uniform?”, she added, trying to explain her gesture.

The reactions were not delayed. A woman who was part of the council members shook her head and intervened firmly: “No, you can't,” While the rest were discussed between them visibly disturbed, as can be seen in the images that went viral in the online environment.

The vice -president of the school council interrupted the meeting and announced a break. “I will finish my comments. Otherwise, you violate my right guaranteed by the first amendment,” Beth Bourne replied, insisting that he has the right to continue.

“I run like cockroaches”

After a break of ten minutes, the meeting was resumed, and Beth Bourne was allowed to finish her intervention, with a warning from Jackson: “You can complete your public comment. If you disturb the meeting again, it will be suspended and you will be asked to leave the room.”

Returning to the podium, the activist asked if the gesture to take off his clothes is really a disturbance and if he is allowed to wear the bathing suit. Not being a clear answer, he brought out his shirt again.

The gesture led to a new departure of the members of the Council. “I'm sorry, it's a bra on the bathing suit”said Beth Bourne, raising her hands in a sign of frustration. After about 30 minutes, the meeting was resumed, but the activist was no longer at the podium.

The event also sparked reactions in the online environment. Beth Bourne posted on the X platform video recordings during the meeting, Ironically commenting on counselors:
“I run like cockroaches.”

According to California legislation, a public meeting can be interrupted when participants adopt a “Disturbing behavior” which makes it impossible to carry out the normal work.

The Brown law, which regulates government meetings, provides for such situations expressly, but the activist challenges this interpretation, claiming that the mere change of clothes should not be considered a violation of the rules.

So far, representatives of Davis Joint Unified School District have not officially commented on the incident.

The term “non-binary” refers to a person whose gender identity does not fit strictly in the traditional “man” or “woman” categories.
