Poland has noticed an increased drone activity near its border with Belarus at night, the Warsaw government announced on Thursday after closing this border before Minsk's military exercises with its near ally, Moscow, Reuters reported.

The concerns of Poland, a member of the NATO and the EU Alliance, regarding the extensive war exercises “Zapad-2025” (“West-2025”) intensified after about 21 Russian drones entered its airspace last week, on the night of 9-10 September.

Asked why the border was still closed, given that the “Zapad” exercises had ended, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said that Poland would reopen it when this movement will be safe.

“Last night, the Border Police noticed an intensified activity of the Belaruse and Russian drones trying to cross the Polish air space,” he said.

“It is clear that the situation on the Polish-Belarusus border remains very, very tense,” Marcin Kierwinski added.

The minister did not provide more details. A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior said that Poland did not intervene and did not try to break down the drones.

Belarus and Russia have strengthened their ties after the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army, Minsk allowing Moscow to send, from Belarus, troops to Ukraine. Poland has so far been one of Ukraine's greatest supporters in conflict.

There are six road border crossing points between Poland and Belarus, four of which have already been closed by Warsaw due to long -term tensions with Minsk.

Three railway border crossing, which were used for the transport of goods, were closed.

Agreement between Poland and Ukraine

Last week, against the Russian drones that entered Poland's airspace, F-16 Polish and F-35 Dutch fighter jets were raised from Poland. The operation was expensive and highlighted the goals in defense of the alliance against military drones.

Previously on Thursday, the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Denis Şmîhal, announced that Ukrainian troops and engineers will train their Polish counterparts in a common group in the field of drone control.

“We are talking about the training of engineers and training the soldiers who will be carried out and defend the air space,” Șmîhal told reporters, in a press conference with his Polish counterpart, in Kiev.

“We are not just talking about interception drones, because this is just the tip of the iceberg that allows us to defend our air space together,” said the Ukrainian minister.

After the experience in the war with Russia, the Ukrainians use the most common machine gun fire, although Ukraine also has mobile teams with field, helicopter and Gepard and Skynex systems provided by allies.

Moscow claimed that his forces attacked Ukraine at the time of drones and did not intend to hit Poland.
