Cartoon Network Climate champions. Children and Electronic Waste: From figures to action

Electronic waste is the category of household waste with the fastest growth in the world. By 2030, it is estimated that we will reach 82 million tons a year – from mobile phones and laptops, to charges, batteries and even electronic toys. The World Health Organization already warns that electronic waste becomes “The next growing threat to the environment”.
And yet, a study by Cartoon Network shows that although children use daily gadgets, I know very little about this topic. Many claim they have heard of the notion of “electronic waste”, but only 30% of the children who responded to the study in the EMEA region between 6 and 12. Close 9 out of 10 children (87%) have at least one object that generates electronic wastethe most common being electronic toys, phones, headphones and tablets. Most, however, either keep them unused, after losing their interest in them, or simply throws them – a clear signal that education and awareness is needed.
Here comes the initiative of the Cartoon Network climate champions. The program transforms these worrying statistics on occasions for children: to learn, to act and to inspire each other. In the app Climate championsthere is a section dedicated to electronic waste, with a number of challenges specially designed to help the little ones understand how important recycling is.
Through simple but impactful activities, children discover not only What are electronic wastebut also How much bad can I do nature if not managed correctly. For example, they are invited to make a list of all home electronic devices and promise that, when they no longer use them, they will recycle them. Another challenge teaches them to take care of their charges, to extend their lifespan, and another shows that a phone, one tablet or an old game should not be thrown – they can be given or changed, as long as it still works, to receive a second life. Through these challenges, children understand that every object they use has a life cycle and that their choices matter. And when millions of children choose to recycle, reuse or take better care of their devices, the impact on the planet becomes huge.

For the little ones, these exercises are not just ecology lessons, but the opportunities to discover that they can be part of the solution. Cartoon Network, through Climate championsshow children that the power of change begins right from their hands – and that together they can build a cleaner and more responsible future.
