The Trump administration has approved the first US weapons packages for Ukraine, which could be sent soon, in the context of resuming weapons to Kiev-this time by a new financial agreement with the Allies, two familiar sources with the situation told Reuters.
It is for the first time that the new mechanism is used, created by the US together with the Allies, which allows the supply of weapons from American stocks to Ukraine, using funds of NATO countries.
The undersecretary for defense policy, Elbridge Colby, has approved up to two $ 500 million transports each, through the new mechanism called Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (Purl), sources said.
The new transatlantic cooperation, which aims to support Kiev with weapons worth up to $ 10 billion, comes in the context of US President Donald Trump has expressed frustration of Moscow's continuous attacks, despite his efforts to obtain a negotiated conflict.
So far, the Trump administration has sold weapons to Ukraine or sent donations previously authorized by former President Joe Biden, a firm Kiev supporter.
The sources refused to offer an exact list of the approved equipment for the acquisition by Europeans for Ukraine, but said that the packages include anti -aircraft defense systems, which Kiev needs in the context of intensifying Russian attacks with drones and missiles.
One of the sources said that the Purl list now goes through the procedural stages, after receiving the opinion of the Pentagon policy unit. The Pentagon did not respond immediately to the comment request.
“They are exactly the things they asked for. And there are many,” the source said. “This flow of equipment is the one that allowed them to stabilize the lines so far.”
According to experts, the needs of Ukraine remain the same as in the previous months: anti -aircraft defense systems, interceptors, launchers, rockets and artillery.
