As the German government pointed out in a press release, Merz expressed recognition for Poland as “an important European neighbor and close friend of Germany during the meeting with Nawrocki.” He also noted that Poland plays a key role in both the European Union and in strengthening the European pillar of NATO.

Leaders also condemned the last violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones. The Chancellor noted that the Germans are standing on the Polish side in the face of a threat.

During the meeting, the leaders also agreed that the high priority has a joint protection of the Baltic Sea region and the NATO eastern flank. Therefore, the German government extended and expanded its involvement in patrolling the airspace over Poland.

The communiqué also reads that the leaders “appreciated the dynamic economic, social and cultural relations between Poland and Germany.”
