President Karol Nawrocki in Germany. That's what he said about reparations
On Tuesday, President Karol Nawrocki will visit Berlin, where he will meet with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The talks are primarily to concern the security of the NATO eastern flank, but the Polish leader's agenda will also include the issue of reparation for World War II.
According to the announcement of the president's environment, Nawrocki wants to raise the topic of the return of cultural goods and the payment of compensation. Already at the beginning of September, the spokesman of the head of the state Rafał Leśkiewicz announced that the case would be raised during talks in Berlin. Nawrocki also referred to this thread on September 1, speaking at Westerplatte, where he said that reparations were necessary to build partner relations with Germany “based on the foundations of truth”.
However, Berlin's position remains unchanged. The German government is consistently repeating that the matter of reparations has been legally closed, and this topic Chancellor Merz clearly rejected during a visit to Warsaw on May 7. On Monday, this was also confirmed by the Government Plenipotentiary of Germany for cooperation with the Polish Knut Abraham, but adding that you need a “modern translation” of Germany's historical commitment – e.g. through cooperation in the field of security.
This proposal is part of the suggestions of the head of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski, who indicated that the symbolic gesture of Berlin could take the form of investment in Polish defense.
The official announcement of the Chancellor's office announcing Nawrocki's visit was not mentioned about reparations. It was emphasized, however, that talks would concern current events, double -sided cooperation and international security policy.
The Polish president does not plan an official press conference in Berlin.
