Pope Leon XIV criticized the compensation packages in corporations that offer executive directors much higher salaries than their employees, in fragments from his first press interview, given to publicity on Sunday. In this regard, he invoked the recent remuneration plan for the general manager of Tesla Elon Musk, who would be rewarded with shares worth about $ 1,000 billion, reports Reuters, taken over by AGERPRES.

The Pontiff, originally from Chicago, also spoke about the United Nations, about the decades spent as a missionary in Peru, about the way he adapted to the role of Pope and about his hopes for peace in the bloody three -year conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

He displayed a more reserved style than his predecessor, Pope Francis, who often gave interviews, preferring to speak based on prepared texts. The fragments given to the publicity on Sunday were published on the Catholic website Crux.

“The executive directors who 60 years ago won four to six times more than the workers win (now) 600 times more,” the Pope said in the interview at the end of July for a biography in training.

“We have a big problem”

“Yesterday, the news appeared that Elon Musk will become the first trillionaire in the world,” he says at that time. “What does that mean and what is it about? If this is the only thing that has value, then we have a big problem,” he continued.

Leon XIV also said that the United Nations is no longer able to promote an effective multilateral diplomacy.

“The United Nations should be the place where many problems are solved,” the Pope said. “Unfortunately, it seems to be widely recognized that the UN, at least at this time, has lost its ability to bring people to multilateral issues,” added the Pontiff.

Speaking of his choice as Pope, Leon XIV confessed that at first he felt more prepared to guide the 1.4 billion Catholics from all over the world, but less prepared to play a major role on the global diplomatic scene. “The complete new aspect of this mission is that I was propelled at the world leader level,” said the Pontiff. “I learn a lot and I feel very challenged, but not overwhelmed,” the Pope said.
