Tens of thousands of people participated on Sunday, in Ankara, in a manifestation of the main political formation of Turkish opposition, the Republican People's Party (CHP), on the eve of a possible dismissal of the CHP leadership, France Presse and Reuters, quoted by Agerpres.

The protesters gathered in the Tandogan Square in the capital of Turkey.

The possible decision to invalidate the CHP's 2023 Congress due to procedural irregularities could reshape the party and influence the calendar of general elections, initially established for 2028. The court could postpone a decision.

Addressing CHP supporters, the leader of the party, Ozgur Ozel, said that the Turkish government is trying to cling to power by undermining democratic norms. Ozel asked the convening of early elections.

“This case is political. The accusations are slanderous. Our colleagues are innocent. What happens is a coup against the future president, against the future government. We will oppose, we will oppose, we will oppose,” said the leader of CHP.

The Ankara government states that the judicial system is independent and denies any political motivations.

During corruption investigations, during the last year, Turkey arrested over 500 people, including 17 mayors, in Istanbul and other Turkish cities run by CHP.

Hundreds of CHP members are in preventive arrest waiting for corruption and terrorism processes, including the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, the main political rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Imamoglu's arrest in March has caused the largest protests in Turkey in the last decade.
