Pope Leon XIV, who turns 70 on Sunday, thanked them at the end of the prayer Angelus to the believers who came with thousands in Saint Peter Square in the Vatican, wearing banners “Happy Birthday,” reports France Presse.
“Beloved, it seems that you know they are 70 years old today,” he said, smiling at the believers.
“I thank the Lord, my parents and to all those who thought of me in prayer,” concluded the Pontifical Sovereign, applauding the crowd.
No event is officially foreseen by the Vatican to mark the pope's anniversary, which will prescribe a liturgy for the martyrdom of the 21st century.
But numerous greeting messages have already reached Pope Leon XIV from some Italian political personalities, including the presidents of the Republic, Senate and Chamber of Deputies.
