After several weeks of media silence, the American press began to write more and more about a brutal attack that took place last month in a train from North Carolina and who fell victim to a young Ukrainian refugee, Irina Zaruţka, the more so as the case began to be invoked, to justify the Politics.
The facts took place on August 22, when Irina Zaruţka, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, climbed a train in Charlotte (North Carolina) to return home after a working day in a pizzeria. Shortly before the local time 10:00, she was stabbed three times in the throat by another passenger, who was behind her. He was identified by investigators as Decarlos Brown JR, 34 years old, a homeless man, with a long criminal record and psychiatric problems – schizophrenia, according to his mother.
The unprovocated attack is now investigated by the FBI.
The victim, Irina Zaruţka, fled from Ukraine in 2022 with her mother, sister and brother to escape the war with Russia. He was a talented artist who worked at a pizzeria and dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant.
A frightening video recording of the facts increased emotion, and the case has transformed into a sensitive point while the Trump administration promises to take drastic measures against crime in large cities that are democratic faster.
“The approach supported by Democrats allows these criminals to walk free”
The case has become the most recent hot point in the debate if cities like Charlotte approach violent crime, mental illnesses and public transport safety. The Trump administration states that this crime shows how local leaders, judges and policies in cities run by Democrats fail to protect their inhabitants from violent offenses.
“Too many innocent people from all over the country continue to pay for the price of the failed experiment known as cash, supported by the Democrat Party for years,” said the White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday. “Instead of prosecuting them criminally and closing violent criminals, approaching the homeless bail supported by Democrats allows these criminals to walk free in our country and to commit crimes again,” she added.
Leavitt's comments come just a few hours after the White House posted a video with the president, in which he made the connection between the deadly stabbing and his measures to combat crime in Washington DC and throughout the country. “We have to respond with strength and power. We must be ruthless, just like them,” said the president. “The citizens of our country must insist on the protection, safety, law and order,” he urged.

The suspect with a long criminal past
“Cash without cash” is a term that refers to the policies of reform of criminal justice that have overturned the traditional practice of forcing people to be released from prison before the trial. Critics have asked to replace this money -based system with one to focus on public safety, the rights of the defendants and to ensure that the persons accused of crimes will be presented before the court, explains CNN.
The suspect in the incident with the stabbing of Ukrainian has a long criminal past, including condemnations for armed robbery, qualified theft and breaking. He spent more than five years in prison for hazardous weapon robbery.
The Department of Justice was charged on Decarlos Brown Jr. on Tuesday for the fatal stabbing on the train, which means that it could be sentenced to death.
“Irina Zaruţka was a young woman who lived the American dream – her horrible killing is a direct result of gentle crime policies, who put criminals before innocent people,” said Prosecutor General Pam Bondi. “We will request the maximum punishment for this act of unforgivable violence – he will never see the light of day as a free man,” promised the head of the Department of Justice, quoted by The Associated Press.
