Tunisia secured its place at the 2026 World Cup after a dramatic victory, 1-0, in a duel disputed today, on the field of the Equatorial Guinea.
A goal scored in the 94th minute by Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane (26 years old), a player who evolves for the Egyptians from Al Ahly, qualified Tunisia at the final tournament of 2026, thus being the second team from Africa qualified, after Morocco, who secured his place with a perfect course in the preliminaries.
Drama on Malabo land
Tunisia had a difficult match in Malabo. The hosts needed victory to maintain their chances of qualification, and the North African team was constantly under pressure. The goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen was decisive, with spectacular interventions in front of Saul Coco, Emilio Nsue and Alejandro Masogo.
However, the goal of the qualification came at the end, during a quick counterattack. Firas Chaouau “stole” the ball of Coco, entered the box and stepped decisively for Mohamed Ben Romdhane, who sent the ball in the net next to the goalkeeper Jesus Owono.
With this victory, Tunisia is sure of the first place in the H group, with two stages before the end, and has reached the final tournament without getting any goals in the eight qualification parties. The other teams that make up the group H are: Nambia, Liberia, Malawi, Equatorial Guinea and RD Sao Tome and Prince.
The historian of the Tunisians to the World
Tunisia will participate for the seventh time in a final World Cup tournament. In 2022, in Qatar, they had an honorable path, ending over Denmark in Group D and achieving a memorable victory against France, but they missed the qualification in the finals.
The first appearance at a world championship was in the one in 1978, a tour hosted by Argentina, where the Tunisians failed to cross the group phase. They met opponents such as Germany, Poland and Mexico.
For equatorial guinea, the chances of reaching their first World Cup are now reduced. The team is in the fourth place in the group, two points behind Namibia, but has a more disputed match. However, the federation filed a challenge to FIFA for two matches lost at the “green table” because of a player without the right of play, which, if accepted, could bring the team in the second place in the standings.
