The secretary of the US Treasury, Scott Bessent, said on Sunday that the additional economic pressure exerted by the United States and Europe could cause Russian President Vladimir Putin to initiate peace negotiations with Ukraine, Reuters reports.

“If the US and (the European Union) can intervene, they can impose several sanctions, secondary rates that buy Russian oil, the Russian economy will come into a total collapse, and this will bring President Putin to the negotiation table,” Bessent said in the show The Press of the NBC.

Bessent said that President Donald Trump's administration is “ready to intensify the pressure on Russia.”

He added, however,: “We need our European partners to follow us, because if the US and the EU act together, we are in a race between how long the Ukrainian army can resist and how long the Russian economy can resist.”

Trump was frustrated by his inability to put an end to Ukraine struggles, after initially predicted that he could quickly end the war when he took over in January.

He suspended new sanctions against Russia and China, one of the main Russian oil buyers. But it has increased tariffs for American imports in India, another important Russian energy consumer.
