The Ukrainian forces gave up 5 square kilometers, but they regained control over 26 square kilometers in the Pokrovsk sector in the Donetk region, the Ukrainian army chief, General Oleksandr Sîrski, announced on Saturday.
Throughout the summer, Moscow's troops have focused their biggest efforts around Pokrovsk, sending sabotage and recognition units that temporarily entered the city, but were rejected. Sîrskîi said that only the Ukrainian army rejected only 350 attacks in the area last week.
“Here Russia has gathered its largest offensive group, trying to break our defense lines,” said the Ukrainian general.
A similar scenario occurred in Dobropillia, where the Russians advanced spectacular at the beginning of August through infiltration tactics, but the lost land was largely regained by the Ukrainian army.
Although Ukraine has been in a strategic defensive position on the Eastern Front for almost two years, more and more counterattacks have been reported. These are mainly led by the assault forces, the new military branch created by Sîrskîi on August 18th.
In the first days of September, the 425 Regiment Assault “Skelia” announced that it has released two villages near Pokrovsk – Novoekonomichne and Udachne – under the Russian occupation.
Russia intensifies its terrestrial attacks in eastern Ukraine, trying to conquer Pokrovsk, a strategic logistics knot. Advances in the region can give the Kremlin an advantage in any peace negotiations, in the context in which the US President Donald Trump is pressing for a war to cease.
