The fastest European supercomputer became operational on Friday, in western Germany, in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Supercomputer Jupiter is located in the Jülich research center, near the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands and aims to increase the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), notes the DPA, according to AGERPRES.
“This computer, the fourth as speed in the world, opens completely new possibilities for training AI models or for scientific simulations,” said Merz Chancellor, adding that it strengthens the leading position of Germany in the technological revolution.
“We want Germany to become a nation. It is very possible that one day, in retrospect, we will consider the 2020 to the decade of our times,” said Merz.
Currently, the US and China lead detached in the AI race, but Europe and Germany will have the opportunity to reach them, he said.
“We have world-level research institutes. We have world-level universities. We have dynamic and successful start-ups, for example Deepl in the field of automatic translations or Black Forest Labs in the field of imaging or heels in security and defense,” he added.
Jupiter is fed with green electricity and is thus the most efficient energy supercomputer in the world.
This makes this supercomputer unique, said Astrid Lambrecht, the head of the Research Center. “In a period when digitalization and technology AI requires more and more energy, we use Jupiter to demonstrate what the way to green resources technology looks,” she said.
