Research shows that constant consumption of marijuana is associated with an increased risk of serious conditions, including stroke, heart attacks, heart arrhythmias, heart failure, a heart muscle inflammation, CNN reports.
The list can now be included an increased risk of dementia, according to a large study that has been conducted on over 6 million people and published on April 14 in Jama Neurology magazine.
“Someone who goes to the guard room or is hospitalized due to the consumption of cannabis has a 23% higher risk of dementia in the next five years, compared to someone who was admitted to the hospital for another reason. They have a 72% higher risk than the general population,” said Dr. Daniel Myran, co -author of the study and assistant professor in the University department.
“These figures have already taken into account other reasons for dementia, such as age, sex, mental health or consumption of substances and whether or not you have chronic conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease,” explained Myran.
Previous research has shown that a marijuana consumer is almost 25% more likely to require emergency and hospitalization more than a person who does not consume the drug.
“However, this is not a study that someone should look at and say,” The jury has been pronounced, and the consumption of marijuana causes dementia “, added Daniel Myran. “This is a study that highlights a worrying association that falls into an increasing volume of research,” he warned.
“It does not stop consumption even if they encounter problems”
The study represents an alarm signal for health professionals who are in charge of performing analyzes on cannabis disorders, said Dr. Robert Paige II, professor of clinical pharmacy and physical medicine at the Skaggs school and pharmaceutical sciences of the University of Aurora, Colorado.
“People with disorders related to cannabis consumption do not stop consumption even if they encounter health or social problems,” said Paige, who presided over the medical writing group for the 2020 scientific statement of the American Heart Association on Marijuana.
“When they cease to use, either they have withdrawal symptoms or they have very serious mental symptoms,” he continued. “It may have a pretty severe depression or they might have anxiety, all of which can send them to the hospital,” Paige added.
The potency of cannabis has increased vertiginously over the years, which can increase health risks and lead to a global increase in marijuana addiction, as well as cannabis consumption disorders, according to a 2022 study.
About 30% of people who consume cannabis can be affected by addiction, shows the data of the American Center for disease prevention and control. According to the CDC, the disorder comes with a higher risk of attention, memory and learning.
“The other conclusion of this study is that many people believe that marijuana is natural and therefore safe. It is a psychotropic drug, so it will have psychotropic effects,” concluded Page.
