Daniil Medvedev (29 years old, 13 ATP) had a nightmare period and was eliminated prematurely from the US Open. Shortly after the failure of New York, he made the decision to conclude his collaboration with his coach, Gilles Cervara.

For Danil Medvedev, the US Open has turned into a real drama. The Russian player left New York in 2021 with the trophy in his arms, but this time he left with a defeat in the first round and a stinging fine for a crisis of anger. After the tour, Medvedev seriously reflected and made a radical decision, according to Sportnieuw.nl.

Medvedev kicked his coach after the US Open disaster

Medvedev has been among the best players in the world for years and has already reached six Grand Slam finals. But he only won the final at the US Open in 2021. The last time he arrived in a major final was last year at the Australian Open, but since then the Russian is in a visible decline.

Medvedev has not won any two -year -old title, and in 2025, at the Grand Slam tournaments, the situation was disastrous. At the beginning of the year, at Melbourne, he won a single match, but at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open was eliminated from the first round.

This form crisis determined on Medvedev to conclude collaboration with coach Gilles Cervara. “Thank you, Gilles. There were 8-10 years wonderful together, 20 titles, world number 1, but more importantly, a lot of fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever. I am grateful for everything you guided me in these years and we will see what our lives reserve in the future.”the Russian wrote on Instagram.

Under the guidance of the French, Medvedev became one of the best players in the world. Not only did the US Open win, but in 2020 it also triumphed at the Champions Tournament (ATP Finals) and was six times the best at a Masters tournament.

Medvedev was also the world number 1 for sixteen weeks. When he took over the first position in the standings, he put an end to an 18 -year -old domination of “Big Four”. Since 2004, only Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray had held this position.

Cervara is not the only person to leave Medvedev's team. And physical trainer Eric Hernandez no longer works for him. Medvedev has been working with him since 2014.

Nervous outbreak to the US Open

Medvedev, in difficulty, came to the attention of the whole world after eliminating from the US Open, but this was mainly due to his inappropriate behavior. In the third set against Benjamin Bonzi, Medvedev had a match ball to defend, and after the Frenchman missed the first service, a photographer suddenly entered the field. The referee granted to Bonzi a new first service due to distraction, at which point the circus caused by the Russian began.

He protested vehemently to the referee, incited the public and thus caused a few minutes. Bonzi was visibly affected and saw his advantage disappear as by charm. However, the Frenchman grouped himself in the fifth set and eventually eliminated Medvedev. After the match, the Russian destroyed a rocket. His “escapades” brought a stinging fine.
