High officials of the Pentagon analyze the possibility of the United States Federal Government to purchase participants in large weapons producers, including Lockheed Martin, the Secretary of Trade, Howard Lutnick.
The statement comes just a few days after the Trump administration bought 10% of Intel shares, in a transaction of about $ 9 billion, reports News.ro citing the American CNBC.
Asked if the Government could reply this strategy in the case of defense contractors, Lutnick confirmed that there is “a huge discussion” on this topic.
“Lockheed is practically an arm of the US government. But what is the economy behind this? I leave the secretary of the defense and his deputy to answer,” Lutnick said, adding that the Pentagon team “is seriously thinking” at this step.
He also stated that President Donald Trump “reconsider how the US should finance its ammunition and defense capabilities”, suggesting a possible major change in how to allocate the Congress approved budgets.
A Lockheed Martin spokesman said that the company continues its collaboration with the Trump administration “to strengthen the national defense”. The Pentagon has not yet offered an official comment, says CNBC.
Lockheed Martin is the largest defense contractor in the world, followed by RTX, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics and Boeing.
The initiative would mark a new stage in Trump's economic policy, which, through direct investment in Intel, has already aroused criticism that they are departing from the principles of free market and risks subordinating the corporate decisions to political considerations.
