US President Donald Trump estimated on Friday that in two weeks he will know if his progress is possible in his attempt to stop the war unleashed against Ukraine and evoked the scenario of some sanctions on Moscow, Reuters reports.
“I am not satisfied,” said the American leader on Friday, in statements to the reporters present in the White House Oval Office, while talking about peace efforts.
Donald Trump has met with his Russian counterpart last Friday in Alaska, but he has not been able to convince him to have a summit with the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, even though Monday night he and Vladimir Putin “started the arrangements” in this regard.
“There is a huge hatred there,” Trump said. “But we will see what happens. I think in two weeks we will know where I am heading,” added the US president. He said that he will decide then if he will impose “massive sanctions” or choose to do nothing and say “is your struggle”.
Russia, accused of preventing Putin-Zenski summit
The President of Ukraine has repeatedly applied for a meeting with Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump said that his Russian counterpart had agreed to organize such a summit during a bilateral call they had on Monday, when they were at the White House Volodimir Zelenski and a series of European leaders.
On Friday, the Ukrainian leader said that Russia is doing everything he can to meet between him and his Kremlin counterpart, urge Kiev's allies to introduce new sanctions if Moscow shows no interest in peace.
“The Russians do everything they can to prevent the meeting,” Volodimir Zelenski said.
Also on Friday, the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs said “no meeting” between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine.
“No meeting is planned,” Sergei Lavrov said in an interview for the show “Meet with Kristen Welker” from NBC, quoted by AFP.
Minister Lavrov claims that President Vladimir Putin will be ready to have a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart “when there is an agenda for the summit”, but “at this time there is no”.
