Several experts of the United Nations (UN) denounced in a letter to Moscow, in the midst of a possible peace plan, “horrible” sexual cakes to which Ukrainian civilians were subjected to the regions of Ukraine occupied by Russia, informs France Presse and Agerpres on Thursday.
In general, they accuse Russia of leading a “deliberate and systematic torture policy” in Ukraine.
“Beaten, tied to the eyes, subjected to simulated executions”
The special rapporteur on torture, Alice Jill Edwards, as well as several other experts, sent to the Russian Federation a file that documents these cases.
These are ten Ukrainian civilians “mistreated in the occupied regions of Ukraine, especially in Herson, Kharkov and Zaporojie.”
“These distinct accusations, which relate the experiences of four women and six men, are truly horrible,” said Edwards, who point out that these cases are “only a small sample.”
These victims were subjected to “highly sexualized violence, including rapes, rape threats and other depraved behaviors,” the expert insisted.
In all documented cases, repeated electric shocks were administered, especially on the genital organs. “These civilians were beaten, hit while they were tied to the eyes and, in some cases, subjected to drowning and simulated executions,” the experts' communication states.
“Russia seems to have totally abandoned international rules”
These specialists in areas related to respect for human rights in the broad sense are mandated by the Human Rights Council, but I do not speak on behalf of the UN.
“An elementary rule of the international law of the war stipulates that civilians must be protected. Russia seems to have totally abandoned international rules. It is time for it to account for these illegal practices and to exert increased pressure by all states that have an influence on it,” the Australian expert insisted.
The signatories of the letter asked the Russian government to provide “additional information on specific accusations, as well as on the general measures taken to prevent torture and sexual violence committed by Russian military personnel and auxiliary staff, as well as the authorities of information and detention services.”
One of the women concerned is still held in the Russian Federation and a call for its urgent release has been launched, the statement states.
