The Ukrainian, identified as Serchii K., was arrested in the Italian resort Rimini being accused of being one of the organizers of the explosive placement operation under the North Stream 1 and 2 pipes near the Danish island Bornholm in September 2022, according to Politico.
The explosions caused major gas leaks and caused damage to both pipes that are a key route for Russian gas that reaches Europe.
The German prosecutors, where the investigation into sabotage documents takes place, announced the arrest of the Ukrainian by the Italian police based on an international arrest warrant.
Investigators believe that the group rented a yacht in the German city of Rostock under the explosion. Subsequently, traces of octogen, an explosive for military use, were discovered on board.
According to German authorities, Serhii K. has dealt with the coordination of the attack with other people. In the investigation, he is accused of provoking an explosion, committing an contrasting sabotage and destroying the infrastructure.
