In 1994, Ukraine signed the Memorandum in Budapest, which agreed to give up the nuclear arsenal inherited from the Soviet Union, in exchange for security guarantees and other international powers. The man who led the Kiev team at that time is now worried that Ukraine's allies are about to commit a similar error.

The Ukrainians reacted with restraint to the White House Summit, organized on Monday between US President Donald Trump, Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, and European leaders.

In Ukraine, confusion and anxiety have made their way after Trump seems to have changed the camp to support his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, giving up calls for an armistice and proposing that Ukraine accepts an “exchange of territories”. While Western allies talk about progress prospects, people in Ukraine remain skeptical, and the contradictory statements of the Trump administration about possible security guarantees for Kiev cause concern in the war -devastated country, Sky News reported on Tuesday.

Déjà vu

The deputy Lesia Vasilenko said, for the British television station, that it is not clear what the NATO allies have in mind.

“Who will be there to support Ukraine if Russia decides to resume its imperialist plans and strategies and if he wants to resume this war of aggression?” She asked.

For many Ukrainians, there is a disturbing feeling of “Déjà vu”.

Within the Budapest memorandum in 1994, Ukraine has agreed to give up not the territories, but to its nuclear arsenal inherited from the Soviet Union, in exchange for security guarantees from Russia and other powers. The Ukrainians know how everything was over, at a huge cost for them. Putin violated the part of Russia from the understanding, starting with the invasion of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 and, again, with its large -scale assault three and a half years ago.

“Russia will never give up the plans to occupy all Ukraine”

Yuri Kostenko, a veteran of Ukrainian diplomacy, who has contributed to the leadership of the 1990s, warns that there is a danger that the world would make the same mistake and trust Vladimir Putin when he claims to stop the killings, which American leader Donald Trump says now.

“It is not true, it is not true. Never, but never, Russia – and this is my experience for over 30 years – he will not give up his aggression plans to occupy all Ukraine and I think Mr. Trump, if he truly believes Mr. Putin, will make a very big mistake. Mr. Trump – a very big mistake.

Before the Alaska summit, Western allies agreed that the best way to peace is to force Putin to stop the invasion, hitting him where he hurts, with severe sanctions on his oil trade.

But since then, Trump has given up calls for ceasing fire and withdrew threats to impose tougher sanctions against Moscow.

Instead, the American leader seems to lead the allies in a different and insecure way.

The Ukrainians with whom he discussed the British television station on the streets of Kiev said they would like to believe in the progress of peace negotiations more than anything, but that they are not encouraged by what they hear.

While diplomatic efforts are advancing in an unclear direction, the events on the ground and the sky of Ukraine are depressing predictable. Russia continues to launch hundreds of drones every night, and its army forces are advancing on the front.

If Vladimir Putin really wants to put an end to this war, then it is visible that he does not give any sign in this regard, while the Ukrainians are afraid that Donald Trump leads his allies on an output path, a sterile diplomacy, notes the source.
